Famous Quotes! If it is to be established that there is a God, then we have to have good grounds for believing that this is indeed so. Until and unless some such grounds are produced we have literally no reason at all for believing; and in that situation the only reasonable posture must be that of either the negative atheist or the agnostic. So the onus of proof has to rest on the proposition [of theism].
The day will come when the mystical generation of Jesus, by the supreme being as his father in the womb of a virgin, will be classed with the fable of the generation of Minerva in the brain of Jupiter.
I cannot see how a man of any large degree of humorous perception can ever be religious — unless he purposely shut the eyes of his mind & keep them shut by force.

In case you haven't noticed, most of the U.S. "Founding Fathers" were not exactly religious men. Some were (e.g. Roger Sherman); others were Deists (e.g. Jefferson and Franklin); still others were outright agnostics or atheists (Paine). U.S. evangelicals love to claim the Founding Fathers as their spiritual ancestors, however, their form of religion was unknown until the mid-nineteenth century, and in any event, most Founding Fathers (even the religious ones) would not have been amenable to such a rigidly dogmatic belief system. The discussion on Founding Father Quotes has a lot to say about this. In addition, I have a special page on the U.S. Founding Fathers, which goes into greater depth, and provides some resources for you to check out. |
